DAR Historical Fiction EssayWe are beginning a fairly large writing assignment in the next week. We will be utilizing time in class for research and writing, but some of it will need to be completed outside of class. Each year St. Luke participates in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Essay Contest. I will be distributing a list of requirements to students. The length is 600-1000 words, and the topic is "The Boston Massacre." The deadline will be the end of November 2nd for Rough Draft and November 6th for final draft.
This is a fictional essay based on historical facts. Students will create a character, or even take on the role of a real person in 1770. It is important to follow the prompt which would include some type of family discussion about the role of the events of March 5, 1770. Topic: 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, considered to be a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution. Imagine you are living in Boston, and after witnessing the events of March 5, describe your family's discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British King and Parliament. Check out this teacher's website for links to research sites and more information about this year's contest. Ms. Martin's Essay Site |
Argumentative/Persuasive Writing
The three prompts are in the assignment list above with the rubric for Researching your essays - Find articles about your topic - Look for three main reasons to support your claim, mention a counter claim, then find evidence to support your reasons.
When writing an argumentative paper, common questions to answer include: What is one reason why we should or should not __________________? What evidence or support can I find for this reason? Ex - Claim: Students should be allowed to eat in class Reason 1 - Students who are hungry can't focus. Support One - According to Community Health, eating five to seven times a day in a grazing manner better maintains blood sugar and is the best way to fuel the brain and body. What is another reason why we should or should not ____________________? What support did I find for this reason? Reason 2- A healthy snack should be eaten leisurely and not wolfed down in the hall because it is not allowed in class. Support Two- Students who rush to finish a snack could have an upset stomach and may then have to be excused to the bathroom. What do opponents say about my argument? How can I refute my opponent's claim? Opponents Ex: Teachers and Administrators believe that too much trash is left in the classrooms, and students are not responsible to clean up after themselves. They also may feel it is noisy and distracting. Refute: Students who abuse the rules can be disciplined. Helpful information can be found here: Examples of two sides of an argumentative essay. Example from Mrs. Landreau base on the George Ella Lyon Poem.
"Where I’m From" by Mrs. Landreau
I am from Dr. Tichenor’s used for all ailments, and Jergens lotion lightly scented with almond.
I am from Louisiana - Southern. both spicy and sweet
Like the pralines sold on the docks and the crawfish boiling in the pot.
I am from the Magnolia, the state flower of both sides of our mighty river.
I am from Sunday dinners at the lake, Easter pinatas and egg hunts.
I am from Sledge and Guercio, both sides stubborn and loyal.
I am from loud voices and big mouths shouting stories across the table.
I am from Mangia, and “Just take a bite.”
I am from First Communions, Reconciliations, and Confirmations.
I am from from “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and“How Great Thou Art.”
From these songs sung at mass as we passed the collection and brought up the gifts.
From St. Mary’s and Our Lady of Lourdes to St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
I am from hardworking Theresa and Thomas different but united in marriage
Whose parents came to this country in search of a better life.
I am from Pat and Tita who met across the country and returned to the South
To build a business and raise their families with tradition and faith.
I am from the photo albums kept by my own parents in random order throughout the years.
From mementos of pictures, award ribbons, certificates and classwork.
And mixed among the happy memories are news of tragedy and loss.
These items represent a life filled with challenges, filled with joy and sadness,
Filled with friends and family, but most of all filled with security of the love that has surrounded me.
